Routers

A computer router or network router transfers data from one computer to another. A router is similar to a street with intersections. Routers connect information pathways in the same ways roads connect us to highways and other destinations. A router table is installed into each computer system. This router table is the encoding information for the router to be able to process your data correctly.

The router was developed by William Yeager in 1980. He is a researcher at Stanford University. He was looking for a way to connect the computers in the science department. He developed a programming system to allow the router to function properly while taking up very little memory.

The most common router is the edge router. It is used to connect users to the internet. This router is specialized to allow it to connect to two networks at the same time. This is what allows internet information to appear so quickly when you type into a search engine or type in a particular website address. This same type of router allows you to read and send emails and instant messages.

A new type of routing is called wanpipe routing. Rather than routing by the IP address it uses the protocol stack to accomplish sending and receiving information. It is cheaper than a router and uses less space.

There are very specific types of routes depending on your needs. You would want to use a specialized router for a large business versus what you would use for your home computer. The functions of routers can be very complex. It is recommended that you consult a computer expert to decide what type of router will best meet your needs. Lucky for most of us, it comes already programmed with our internet service package.

The router is one area most of us aren’t aware of troubleshooting when our computer internet connection is not working properly. To find out if your router needs replaced, simply connect your computer directly to the modem. If you can log on, you will need to have your router repaired or replaced. While I am not familiar with routers, I am thankful for what they offer me – instant access to all the information I could ever want via the comfort of my computer in my own home.
