Wireless Routers

A wireless router is a piece of computer hardware used to join networks together. This allows us to send and receive email, access information online quickly, and instant message. The best type of wireless router to purchase is one that has a low probability of interference, high speed, allows data to be shared, and allows the download of music and videos.

Wireless routers range in price from $70-90. Regardless of the brand you buy,  it is an inexpensive way to upgrade your computer and be connected to the unlimited resources at your fingertips on the internet.

The wireless router was developed in 1991 in the Netherlands. The purpose was for cashier systems to operate faster and more efficiently. The wireless router combines an IP router with an Ethernet switch. The switch connects to the access point. This allows external devices to remain connected. The main advantage of a wireless router is it allows three devices to be access through one central location. That location is almost always a web server.

A range extender can be added to a wireless router to increase the current range of the wireless router. The extender is placed in an area where the signal is the strongest. Microsoft XP has a built in wireless router. This allows the system to have built in support and configuration.

One of the challenges is laying out access points and ensuring that adequate radio coverage is provided throughout the service area. The layout must be based on measured, calculations. These measurements must be tested for accuracy. Often even a carefully measured and tested access point has to be modified after installation is complete in order to correct coverage gaps. A careful balance has to been made. On one hand you want to have as few access points as possible to reduce the cost. However, if you fail to have sufficient access points, then there will be gaps where service is not accessible.

The average person knows very little in conjunction with wireless routers. It is advised that if you are in the market for one you consult a computer specialist to assist you in choosing a router to meet your needs. In the long run, this extra precaution can save you money and frustration down the road.
